Dishwasher picker: white, Home Assistant, installed

White 24" built-in dishwashers for Alameda (94501), installed and with the old unit hauled away. Front-control and hidden-control options are kept separate. Each one is checked for how well it really works with Home Assistant and how reliable the brand is.

Home Assistant check

I read the official HA docs and checked open GitHub issues for each ecosystem.

Bosch: Home Connect (official). Solid

  • Status: built into Home Assistant core with the top Platinum quality rating. Updates are pushed from the cloud as they happen (server-sent events), so there's no slow polling. About 5% of HA installs use it.
  • What you get for a dishwasher: operation state (ready, running, finished and so on), door open/closed, program progress %, finish time, a program finished event, rinse-aid-low, machine-care and filter-cleaning reminders, plus program selection, delayed start and remote start from automations.
  • Example automations: a phone alert when the cycle is done, or starting the cycle when electricity is cheap at night. The HA docs include both as examples.
  • Catch 1 (remote start): for safety, Bosch makes you press Remote Start on the machine each time after loading it. Opening the door turns it off again. So the routine is: load, press Remote Start, close, and let HA pick the start time. HA can't start an unarmed dishwasher.
  • Catch 2 (setup): you need to register a free Home Connect developer app and enter its client ID and secret in HA. It's a one-time 10-minute job.
  • Catch 3 (cloud): it depends on Bosch's cloud, which allows 1,000 API calls a day. One user hit that limit in Feb 2026 (that GitHub issue is closed). There's one open bug where entities show as unavailable mid-cycle until you reload the integration.
  • Local fallback: homeconnect_local_hass (a HACS add-on, about 490 stars, updated Oct 2026) talks to the appliance directly on your network with no cloud. That's a good backup if Bosch's cloud ever changes.

Sources: HA docs: Home Connect · Rate-limit issue #162514 · Open issue #173600 (entities unavailable) · homeconnect_local_hass (local control) · Remote-start behaviour (Homey forum)

Samsung: SmartThings (official, but now paid). OK

  • Status: built into HA core but rated Bronze quality. Updates are pushed from the cloud. It covers every SmartThings device, not just dishwashers, so the dishwasher support is less detailed.
  • What you get: machine state, job state, completion time, door state, washing options and an on/off switch. That's enough for a 'dishwasher done' alert.
  • The big change: Samsung is phasing out free API access starting October 2026. Home Assistant users need SmartThings' $4.99/month Personal Plan to keep the integration working. That's about $60 a year forever, and it wipes out Samsung's price advantage over the Bosch 300 within a few years.
  • Open bugs: entities can silently freeze on their last state with no error (#176244), and the completion time can show the wrong date (#159941).
  • No local option for Samsung dishwashers.

GE / Café: SmartHQ (community add-on). Weak

  • Status: not in HA core. You'd install ha_gehome through HACS. It's actively maintained (release v2026.8.0, about 620 stars) but run by one volunteer.
  • Gaps: remote start for Café dishwashers has been an open feature request since 2023, and delayed start since Dec 2025.
  • Combined with Café's repair rate below, it's off the list.

Brand reliability

From Yale Appliance's 2026 report: the share of dishwashers needing a service call in their first year, across 33,190 calls. Lower is better.

Install & haul-away

Install figures are estimates, not a quote for 94501: Best Buy replacement install about $180, parts and hose kit about $35, haul-away about $50 to $60, so about $270 total. Home Depot is about the same. Best Buy blocked my automated checkout, so the exact fees still need to come from a cart or a phone call. Prices are from Best Buy and Bosch on Oct 19, 2026. Best Buy's delivery dates were shown for its default ZIP, so Alameda dates may differ.
